safety isn't GUARANTEED, yet, it's a necessity
Your body and psyche will do whatever it takes to keep you ‘safe.’ However, their definition is more in line with what’s familiar and known.
You want to be a better listener to your partner, but you get defensive instead. It happens before you even realize you’re triggered. It’s like something just takes over you.
Your psyche put defense mechanisms into place to protect you when you were young. You come up against these same defenses in difficult interactions with loved ones. Your defense mechanisms prioritize safety over everything. Their job is to keep you alive.
Though some of you might like to quickly eliminate all these tricky defenses, it doesn’t work that way. After all, they’ve technically been doing their job all along—you’re alive! Instead, they need to be appreciated and reassigned. This requires a lot of intention and it’s a process we go through together in Safe Spaces: The Journey of Kind Communication, the 12-week Coaching Program.
In Safe Spaces, you’ll learn to become a better listener to yourself, getting to know your defenses. As you get familiar with your own, you’ll better recognize other’s.

When you create safety in your close relationships, both parties can relax. Their defenses soften as yours do. More trust develops and this safety becomes the baseline of your relationship. Of course, you won’t always be in perfect harmony but the majority of the time, you will.

Wounds and patterns like fear of expressing yourself, negative self-talk, people-pleasing, and so on.
Breaking these patterns and creating more relationship harmony isn’t a one-size-fits all journey. Some advice may apply to you and some won’t. Your unique experiences, tendencies, defense mechanisms, skills, and fears are all part of what makes you, well… you!
